Pepsico’s PopWorks, Malibu partner on limited-edition piña colada-flavoured snacks

Despite being created in partnership with the brand of rum-based coconut liqueur, the snacks are alcohol-free and have 81 kcal per 85g box.

USA – Malibu has partnered with PepsiCo’s PopWorks snack brand to introduce a new limited-edition popped corn snack that draws inspiration from the piña colada cocktail.

The treats include PopWorks’ traditional crispy, fluffy pieces of popped corn, seasoned with flavors reminiscent of pineapple and coconut found in the beloved cocktail.

Its summer introduction coincides with data showing that piña coladas are a popular summer cocktail among British people.

The goal of the new popped corn snack is to bring exotic summer flavors into a bite-sized, handy snacking format, as over half of British consumers (54%) say the cocktail flavor makes them think of vacationing.

Malibu is a coconut flavored liqueur made with white rum, which has an alcohol content by volume of 21.0% (42 proof). The Malibu brand has been owned by Pernod Ricard since 2005.

In 1978, Tom Jago of International Distillers & Vintners developed the product, which was initially manufactured from fruit spirits and flavored in Curaçao with rum and coconut.

In a recent similar development, Kellanova’s Pringles brand partnered with Miller Lite to create a collection of limited-edition crisps inspired by popular beer-infused barbecue flavors.

The new chip flavors include Pringles x Miller Lite Beer Can Chicken, which features the savory taste of roasted chicken, enhanced with notes of garlic and onion, paired with the authentic flavor of Original Light Beer.

The other flavor is Pringles x Miller Lite Grilled Beer Brat, which boasts a smoky grilled brat taste, complemented by hints of black pepper, caramelized onion, and brown spices, with the essence of Original Light Beer brought to life through its hoppy, malt aroma.

“At Malibu, we love inspiring people to enjoy their time off in unexpected ways. That’s why we’ve teamed up with PopWorks to launch a new snack: a popped corn snack combining PopWorks’ crunch with the tropical flavour of a Malibu piña colada. Non-alcoholic and full of good vibes, it brings the holiday mindset to you, wherever you are. It’s bold, playful, and we hope consumers love it as much as we do,” said Gui Pascuilli, head of culture and partnership at Malibu.
