Orenda Commodity Services Ltd. acquires Scoular’s sunflower business
Scoular has sold its sunflower and wild bird food blending business, including the Winkler, Manitoba processing facility, to Orenda Commodity Services Ltd.; the deal closed Jan. 19, 2026, with financial terms undisclosed.
CANADA – Orenda Commodity Services Ltd. has completed the acquisition of Scoular’s sunflower business and wild bird food blending business, transferring ownership of a processing facility in Winkler, Manitoba.
The transaction closed on Jan. 19, 2026, and Scoular and Orenda confirmed that financial details were not disclosed.
The buyer, Orenda Commodity Services Ltd., is a Manitoba-based, vertically integrated commodity company with operations in Ste. Agathe and Winkler, and a focus on wild bird food blending, packaging and logistics.
Orenda said the acquisition expands its capacity to serve both the retail wild bird food market and the human consumption sunflower seed market, leveraging local supplier networks and existing processing capabilities.
Scoular and Orenda emphasized that the sale includes arrangements to ensure a smooth transition for facility employees, sunflower producers, and end-use customers.
Orenda President Aaron Elskamp noted the companies will work together during the handover to maintain supply continuity and preserve relationships with growers and retailers.
“This acquisition is a natural fit for Orenda, our producers and customers,” said Elskamp.
“Sunflowers are a unique crop with a unique market. Orenda specializes in connecting the entire value chain to create a sustainable crop that boosts the Manitoba economy.”
The Winkler facility will continue to handle product for both the bird food and human consumption markets under Orenda’s management.
Industry observers said the deal reflects a broader trend of specialization and consolidation in the seed and bird food sectors, where regional processors seek scale and integrated logistics to remain competitive.
For Scoular, the divestiture allows the company to concentrate on its core grain origination, processing and risk management businesses while enabling a regional operator with local ties to deepen its presence in Manitoba’s oilseed and seed-mix markets.
Orenda, which employs roughly 80 people across four Manitoba locations, will integrate the Winkler operations into its existing network and said it expects to maintain local employment and supplier relationships.
Company statements framed the acquisition as a strategic fit that strengthens Orenda’s product offerings and logistical reach in the Prairie provinces.
Market participants will watch how Orenda manages seasonal seed flows and retail packaging demands, and whether the acquisition prompts further consolidation among regional processors.
For now, growers and retailers in Manitoba can expect continuity of service as the two companies coordinate the operational transition.
