Morocco ranked third in fertilizer exports to Brazil in June 2023

MOROCCO – Morocco has been ranked third in fertilizer exports to Brazil, following a dramatic increase in June 2023.

According to data from the Brazilian statistics agency, as reported by RIA Novosti, Morocco’s exports surged 2.3 times compared to the previous year, reaching an impressive value of US$147 million.

This significant growth underscores Morocco’s pivotal role in the global fertilizer market. The country’s ascent is largely attributed to its vast phosphate reserves, which constitute over 70% of the world’s total.

This abundance of raw materials, essential for producing phosphorus fertilizers, positions Morocco as a crucial player in addressing global agricultural demands.

In the same period, Russia retained its position as the leading fertilizer exporter to Brazil, with sales rising by 18% year-on-year to US$338 million.

Canada followed, securing the second spot with a 19% increase in exports, totaling US$184 million. China and Egypt also featured prominently, with exports valued at US$127 million and US$80 million, respectively.

Morocco’s remarkable performance in the fertilizer market is the result of strategic and substantial investments in enhancing production capacity.

These investments have enabled Morocco to leverage its vast phosphate rock reserves effectively, solidifying its status as a major player in the international fertilizer market.

A report by The Conversation highlights that Morocco’s substantial phosphate rock reserves, a critical component in phosphorus fertilizer production, reinforce its strategic position in the fertilizer market.

This positions Morocco as a key contributor to global agricultural sustainability.

As the global demand for fertilizers continues to rise, Morocco’s role in the market is expected to grow significantly. The country’s ability to scale up production and export to key markets like Brazil demonstrates its capacity to meet international needs and contribute to global food security.

Recently, the country’s fertilizer giant, the OCP Group, joined Fortescue Energy, part of Fortescue Ltd, specializing in green energy, metals, and technology, to form a landmark joint venture in Morocco.

Based on equal collaboration, this partnership aimed to supply green hydrogen, ammonia, and fertilizers to Morocco, Europe, and international markets while advancing renewable energy technologies.

Their collaboration outlines ambitious plans for several cornerstone projects in Morocco, including large-scale green ammonia and fertilizer production, manufacturing of green technology and equipment, and establishing an R&D and Technology Hub near Marrakech in partnership with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) to advance research in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and minerals processing.
