Mondelēz International France signs landmark sustainability plan with Carrefour

The SLBP focuses on three key priorities that reflect both environmental responsibility and consumer expectations.

FRANCE – Mondelēz International’s French business has become the first entity within the group, and the first player in the biscuits and chocolate sector, to sign a Sustainability Linked Business Plan (SLBP) with Carrefour, marking a landmark collaboration between the manufacturer and retailer on climate action.

The agreement is designed to tie business growth more closely to the delivery of measurable environmental progress, signalling a shift from voluntary commitments to integrated, performance-based sustainability partnerships.

By embedding climate objectives into the commercial relationship, the SLBP aims to speed up the transition of everyday, mainstream brands toward lower-carbon models.

At the heart of the plan are three strategic priorities that target the main emission hotspots in the biscuits and chocolate value chains: packaging, agriculture, and logistics.

First, Mondelēz and Carrefour will work together to accelerate the reduction of plastic packaging used by iconic brands, with a focus on cutting unnecessary materials, boosting recyclability, and increasing the use of recycled content.

This is intended to reduce the environmental footprint of high-volume products while responding to mounting regulatory pressure and consumer concern over plastic waste.

Second, the SLBP deepens the rollout of regenerative agriculture through the Mondelēz Harmony program, which already works with wheat farmers to improve soil health, biodiversity, and resource efficiency.

By expanding farmer engagement, deploying better agronomic practices, and scaling field-level pilots, the partners aim to cut upstream emissions linked to key ingredients used in biscuits and chocolate. This agricultural pillar also supports rural resilience by helping farmers adapt to climate change and meet increasingly stringent market and policy requirements.

The third pillar targets logistics, with a commitment to decarbonize transport by developing rail–road solutions and optimizing flows between production sites and Carrefour’s distribution network.

Shifting more volumes from road-only trucking to combined or rail-based options can significantly reduce emissions per tonne-kilometre, especially on long distances.

Coupled with improved load planning and route efficiency, this is expected to meaningfully trim supply-chain emissions without compromising service levels.

For Mondelēz International, the SLBP with Carrefour in France is presented as a significant milestone in its sustainability roadmap, moving from high-level pledges to joint, operational action with a key retail partner.

By linking commercial terms to environmental performance, the initiative aims to transform supply chains, deliver more responsible products on the shelf, and better meet consumers’ growing expectations around sustainability and transparency.

If successful, this model could serve as a blueprint for similar collaborations in other markets and categories.
