Korea donates 10,000 tons of rice, US$1M to support Madagascar’s food security

MADAGASCAR – The Republic of Korea has donated 10,000 metric tons of rice and US$1 million in cash to the World Food Programme (WFP), significantly bolstering efforts to address food insecurity in Madagascar.

This contribution will support emergency food assistance for 548,000 vulnerable people in the country’s south and southeast regions during the lean season, spanning from October 2024 to April 2025.

The donation has enabled WFP to procure 432 metric tons of additional food supplies, including pulses, fortified vegetable oil, and specialized nutritious foods.

These resources will provide life-saving support to 367,000 people over six months and ensure nutritious school meals for 181,000 students in 586 schools across ten districts in Anosy, Androy, Atsimo Andrefana, and Atsimo-Atsinanana for three months.

“We deeply appreciate the support of the Republic of Korea, a key partner in our mission to combat hunger in Madagascar,” said Mamadou Mbaye, acting Country Director and Representative of WFP in Madagascar.

Madagascar faces ongoing food security challenges fueled by climate change, economic pressures, and seasonal food shortages, which are particularly severe during the lean season.

Many families struggle to access sufficient nutrition, leaving children and vulnerable populations at heightened risk of malnutrition.

WFP’s response includes both in-kind and cash-based food assistance alongside nutritional support for children, adolescent girls, and pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Additionally, WFP, in collaboration with the Malagasy government, operates school feeding programs in public primary schools, ensuring children receive daily nutritious meals essential for their health and education.

The Republic of Korea’s steadfast support has been vital in addressing Madagascar’s food security needs.

Earlier this year, ROK contributed US$10 million to WFP’s efforts in the country. Over the past five years, Korea has provided a total of US$18 million in food assistance to Madagascar, underscoring the long-standing partnership between ROK, WFP, and the Malagasy government.

Her Excellency Mrs. Ji-hyun Park, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Madagascar, emphasized the importance of this collaboration.

“The Republic of Korea, as a reliable partner country, will remain committed to supporting the people of Madagascar and to continued collaboration with WFP.”
