USA – J. Skinner Baking, one of the largest U.S. in-store bakery (ISB) manufacturers, has named David Kowal as its new Chief Executive Officer and David Meltzer as Chief Commercial Officer, marking a pivotal leadership transition as the company accelerates its growth strategy under private equity ownership.

The announcement comes just over a year after Stellex Capital Management acquired the Nebraska-based business, previously family-owned since its founding in 1983.

Kowal brings a wealth of experience in food manufacturing and operational transformation.

He most recently served as CEO of BrightPet Nutrition Group, a U.S. pet food supplier, and previously held senior roles at Dawn Food Products, Champion Foods, and Pillsbury.

His appointment reflects Stellex’s ambition to scale J. Skinner’s footprint in the in-store bakery (ISB) and foodservice segments.

“I’m honored to lead J. Skinner into its next chapter,” said Mr. Kowal.

“This Company has a strong foundation, a passionate team, and a clear mission to deliver value to our customers and consumers. My focus will be on accelerating innovation, deepening our market impact to drive growth, and fostering a culture where bold ideas flourish. Together, we’ll chart a course towards sustainable growth and long-term success.”

Joining Kowal on the executive team is David Meltzer, who steps in as Chief Commercial Officer.

Meltzer previously served as Chief Sales Officer at Teasdale Latin Foods, bringing deep expertise in customer engagement and go-to-market strategy.

“I am excited to join J. Skinner at such a pivotal moment,” said Mr. Meltzer.

“I see tremendous potential to deepen customer relationships, expand into new markets, and build a commercial strategy that is both bold and sustainable. I’m eager to collaborate with the talented team at J. Skinner and help shape the next chapter of growth.”

J. Skinner Baking is one of the largest ISB providers in the U.S., offering artisan pastries such as danishes, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and brownies, available in over 30,000 retail locations nationwide.

The company also serves foodservice providers and operates as a co-manufacturer for branded partners.

The leadership shift signals a renewed focus on innovation, distribution expansion, and operational excellence.

Under Stellex’s ownership, J. Skinner is expected to pursue strategic investments in automation, product development, and customer partnerships to meet rising demand for premium baked goods.

As Kowal and Meltzer take the helm, J. Skinner Baking is poised to evolve from a regional favorite into a national powerhouse, blending tradition with transformation in every bite.
