KENYA – Grain Industries Limited (GIL), one of Kenya’s leading milling companies, has partnered with Compass Energy Solution, a renewable energy provider, to install a 1.55MW solar energy system at its production facility in Mombasa Kenya.
Renowned for its flagship brand Ajab, GIL is a household name, offering consumers a variety of products such as Ajab Home Baking Flour, Ajab Maize Meal, Ajab Atta Flour, Lotus Home Baking Flour, and Umi Maize Flour, among others. The company’s products are popular among consumers for their high quality and excellent properties.
The installation of the solar energy system marks a significant milestone in GIL’s journey toward sustainable operations. This project underscores the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing clean energy solutions.
Secured through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), the solar system will provide GIL with a reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly energy source. The shift to solar power is expected to significantly lower operational costs while contributing to Kenya’s national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote renewable energy adoption.
We are thrilled to work with Grain Industries Limited on this transformative project. This installation not only supports GIL’s operational efficiency but also sets a precedent for other industries to follow in adopting renewable energy solutions,” Compass Energy Solution stated on its LinkedIn page.
The initiative also highlights Compass Energy Solution’s growing expertise in delivering sustainable energy solutions to Kenya’s industrial sector.
“This partnership is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said a GIL spokesperson. “We are proud to take this step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for our business and our country.”
According to Compass Energy, the 1.55MW solar installation will enhance GIL’s energy security, protecting the company from fluctuating energy prices and supply disruptions. It will also support GIL’s long-term sustainability goals, making it a role model for other companies in the region considering renewable energy adoption.
GIL’s dedication to quality and sustainably has earned it Superbrand Status for two consecutive periods, 2020-2022 and 2022-2024. According to a survey conducted by Superbrand, Ajab achieved an impressive 80% brand preference among consumers, cementing its position as one of Kenya’s top brands.
