FAO applauds Oman’s leadership in food security

OMAN – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has commended Oman for its proactive and coordinated efforts in advancing food security, sustainable agriculture, and nutrition.

The recognition came during World Food Day celebrations held at the Diplomatic Club in Muscat, under the patronage of Dr. Said bin Harib al Lamki, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health for Health Affairs.

Dr. Thaer Yassin, Head of the FAO Mission in Oman, praised the Sultanate’s multi-sectoral approach, which involves key national institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR), the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, and the Oman Food Bank.

This collaborative framework has been instrumental in promoting better production, improved nutrition, environmental sustainability, and enhanced quality of life for communities across the country.

Oman’s initiatives include integrating food and nutrition education into school curricula, supporting sustainable farming practices, and strengthening food safety standards.

The country has also made strides in reducing food waste and improving access to nutritious food through programs led by the Oman Food Bank.

These efforts align with FAO’s global goals of transforming agrifood systems to be more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable.

During the event, Dr. Yassin emphasized the urgency of addressing global food challenges, noting that despite decades of progress, the world continues to face complex, interlinked crises such as climate change, conflict, and economic instability.

He highlighted Oman’s leadership as a model for other nations striving to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger.

The FAO has been active in Oman since 2012, supporting projects in climate-smart agriculture, water governance, biodiversity, and rural livelihoods.

This long-standing partnership has fostered innovation and knowledge exchange, helping Oman build a resilient food system that can withstand global shocks.

As the world grapples with mounting food insecurity, Oman’s commitment to holistic, community-driven solutions offers a beacon of hope.

The FAO’s commendation not only celebrates past achievements but also encourages continued investment in sustainable food systems for future generations.
