Egypt woos FAMSUN for strategic agricultural expansion to bolster food security

EGYPT – The Egypt Suez Canal Authority (SCA) is pursuing a strategic partnership with China’s FAMSUN to enhance Egypt’s agricultural infrastructure and reduce reliance on imports.

FAMSUN, a global leader in agricultural engineering and technology solutions, specializes in developing strategic grain and oil storage silos using cutting-edge technology. Their collaboration with Egypt would underscore a shared commitment to advancing the nation’s agricultural sector and ensuring long-term food security.

Osama Rabie, SCA Chairperson and FAMSUN President Chen Zhengjun recently convened to discuss the potential alliance, focusing on leveraging FAMSUN’s expertise in agricultural engineering and technology solutions.

Rabie emphasized the SCA’s dedication to international cooperation, particularly with key partners like FAMSUN, to attract investments and diversify economic activities. He also highlighted the Suez Canal’s strategic importance and the authority’s commitment to large-scale development projects that maximize its geographical advantages.

This partnership aligns with Egypt’s broader agricultural development goals. The “Future of Egypt” initiative seeks to modernize irrigation systems and increase wheat production by 53% and corn production by 56% by the 2025/2026 period, aiming to substantially reduce dependency on foreign markets.

FAMSUN has a notable presence in Egypt, having collaborated on significant projects such as the grain storage silo complex in the New Delta Project’s industrial zone along the Dabaa axis. This facility, inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in May 2024, was completed in partnership with the Mostakbal Misr agency and boasts a storage capacity of up to 500,000 tons.

For his part, Chen Zhengjun expressed enthusiasm about the economic prospects of collaborating with the SCA, acknowledging Egypt’s strategic position as a trade and investment hub.

Zhengjun further stated that, should an agreement be reached, FAMSUN would deploy top experts across all project phases, from planning and design to execution, to guarantee the initiative’s success and contribute to agricultural advancement in the region.

At the meeting’s conclusion, both parties agreed to draft a comprehensive framework outlining areas of cooperation, including financial and technical considerations, to conduct feasibility studies for proposed projects.
