​ Zambia Seed Company marks 50 years of agricultural excellence

The company’s focus on developing high-quality, locally adapted seed varieties has significantly contributed to the profitability of smallholder farmers across Zambia.

ZAMBIA – Zambia Seed Company Limited (Zamseed) recently celebrated its 50th anniversary by hosting the Yield Improvement Centre Open Day at their farm along Ngwerere Road.

The event attracted over 200 farmers and 150 distinguished guests, including government officials and traditional leaders, underscoring Zamseed’s pivotal role in Zambian agriculture.

The Open Day featured guided field tours showcasing innovative seed technologies, interactive sessions with agricultural experts, and cultural performances celebrating Zambian farming traditions. A highlight of the event was the recognition of Dr. Verma for his substantial contributions to agriculture.

Hon. Reuben Mtolo MP, Minister of Agriculture, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor. In his address, he commended Zamseed for its enduring commitment to agricultural development and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to initiatives aimed at improving farmers’ productivity.

Established in 1981 as a joint venture between the Zambian government and private entities such as the Zambia Seed Producers’ Association and the Zambia Cooperative Federation, Zamseed has been instrumental in enhancing agricultural productivity.

The company’s focus on developing high-quality, locally adapted seed varieties has significantly contributed to the profitability of smallholder farmers across Zambia.

Over the past five decades, Zamseed has expanded its operations beyond Zambia, impacting agricultural practices in over ten African countries. The company’s emphasis on quality, modern techniques, and active marketing has solidified its position as a key player in the continent’s agricultural sector.

Through continuous research and development, Zamseed has introduced stress-tolerant maize varieties, benefiting approximately 3.5 million smallholder farmers across ten African countries. These efforts have enhanced food security and improved the livelihoods of countless farming communities.

Adding to its list of accomplishments, Zamseed was honored as 1st Runners-Up in the Seed Supplier of the Year 2024 category at the Farmers Choice Awards.

This achievement is a testament to the trust and support of its valued farmers, partners, and customers.

The company extended heartfelt gratitude to everyone who voted for them, along with appreciation for its dedicated Board, Management, and the entire Zamseed Zambia team, whose commitment to delivering quality seed solutions continues to drive its success.
