The index for all food consumed at home decreased by 0.3%.
USA – According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index for baked foods and cereal products reported a 0.7% decline in April.
Prior to seasonal adjustment, the April index for bakery and cereal products was 356% of the average for 1982–84. The April index was 311.8 for all food consumed at home.
With a CPI of 282.6 for April, cereals and cereal products had a 1.7% decrease from March and a 2.5% decrease from April 2024.
For products in this category, the index was as follows: rice, pasta, and corn meal, 286.8, down 1% from March and down 2.6% from April 2024; breakfast cereal, 274, down 2.5% from the previous month and down 2.6% from April 2024; and flour and prepared mixes, 326.4, down 0.9% from March but up 0.6% from a year ago.
In April, the bakery products price index was 398.9, which was 1.2% higher than in April 2024 but 0.3% lower than in March.
Bread’s April index was 241, up 1.9% from a year ago and 1.6% from March. The CPI for white bread in this heading was 435.2, which was 1.5% higher than March and 1.6% higher than April 2024.
The index for non-white bread was 470, up 1.9% from a year earlier and 1.7% from March.
April’s fresh biscuit, roll, and muffin price index was 238.5, up 3.1% from April 2024 but down 1% from March. Cakes, cupcakes, and cookies had an April index of 376.5, which was up 1.5% from April 2024 but down 0.1% from March.
Other price indices within this category included cookies (355.5), which decreased 0.4% from the previous month but increased 1.7% from the previous year; and fresh cakes and cupcakes (397), which increased 0.6% from March and 2.1% from a year earlier.
In April, the CPI for other bakery products was 353.9, which was 0.9% lower than in March and 0.6% lower than in April 2024.
Other April price indexes under this heading were: crackers and cracker products, 429.2, down 1% from March and down 0.8% from April 2024; frozen and refrigerated bakery products, pies, tarts, and turnovers, 339.2, down 2.6% from March and down 3.2% from a year ago; and fresh sweet rolls, coffee cakes, and donuts, 401.9, down 1.1% from March but up 4.2% from April 2024.
