Unga Group appoints James Nyutu as Group Managing Director
The announcement follows Nyutu’s tenure as Acting MD since June 2024.
KENYA – Unga Group Plc, a publicly listed Kenyan food and animal feed manufacturer, has officially appointed James Nyutu as its Group Managing Director, effective July 1, 2025.
The announcement, made by the company’s Board Chairperson Isabella Ochola Wilson, follows Nyutu’s tenure as Acting MD since June 2024.
Nyutu brings over two decades of experience in business strategy, financial management, corporate governance, and information systems to the role. A long-serving executive within Unga Group, he first joined the company in 2013 as Group Finance Director and later took on additional responsibilities as Group Finance and ICT Director.
In these roles, he was credited with shaping the Group’s financial strategy and leading its digital transformation efforts.
“A seasoned management professional, Mr. Nyutu has over 20 years of experience across business strategy, financial management, corporate governance, and information systems,” said Ochola Wilson.
“The Board congratulates Mr. Nyutu and expresses full confidence in his leadership to drive the company’s strategic growth.”
Nyutu’s early career was rooted in the financial services sector, where he held various roles at Corporate Insurance, British American Insurance Company, and NAS Airport Services. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University in the UK and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi.
His professional qualifications include CPA (K), Certified Public Secretary, and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). He is also a member of the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS).
His appointment comes at a pivotal time for Unga Group, a company with deep roots in Kenya’s agri-food sector. Established over 115 years ago, Unga is one of East Africa’s leading providers of human and animal nutrition solutions.
Unga Group’s operations are structured under two key subsidiaries: Unga Limited and Unga Farmcare East Africa Ltd. The company has been listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) since 1955, making it one of Kenya’s earliest publicly traded firms.
Unga Limited manufactures a wide range of products including wheat, maize, and millet flours, and also trades in sugar, rice, pasta, and pulses. Its production sites are located in Nairobi and Eldoret.
Meanwhile, Unga Farmcare manufactures animal nutrition products and distributes veterinary health solutions through facilities in Nairobi and Nakuru.
