RCL FOODS gives Sunbake a new look while growing baking skills in South Africa

The updated Sunbake packaging comes as RCL FOODS continues to invest in brand growth and youth training through its Siyabhaka Academy.

SOUTH AFRICA – RCL FOODS has introduced a fresh look for its Sunbake white and brown bread range as the company continues to invest in both its consumer brands and skills development across South Africa.

The company said the updated packaging goes beyond a visual change and forms part of its long term plan to strengthen the Sunbake brand. The new design aims to better match shopper behaviour while helping the products stand out on retail shelves. RCL FOODS added that the bread’s quality and taste remain unchanged.

In announcing the change, the company said, “While the look has changed, the trusted quality and delicious taste consumers know and love remain exactly the same.”

RCL FOODS also said the packaging update reflects its continued focus on meeting consumer needs while building stronger brands.

The company stated, “More than a packaging refresh, this is a strategic investment in the future of the brand. Designed to better align with shopper behaviour and improve shelf standout, the new look reinforces Sunbake’s position as a trusted, quality brand that continues to earn its place in shopping baskets across South Africa.”

The packaging update comes as RCL FOODS continues to expand its work in developing skills for South Africa’s baking industry through the Siyabhaka Academy Learnership Programme.

Started in 2019, the programme helps unemployed young people gain practical baking experience, technical training and nationally recognised qualifications. This year, 17 learners joined the programme to complete a Production Operator NQF Level 3 qualification. Five learners are based in KwaZulu Natal, while 12 are training in Gauteng.

Participants receive practical training inside commercial bakeries and work alongside experienced professionals. Technical advisors also guide learners throughout the programme, helping them build workplace skills and confidence.

Since the academy began, RCL FOODS has supported 67 learners through the programme. The company said the initiative helps prepare participants for employment opportunities in the baking sector and can also support those who want to start their own businesses in the future.

Applications for the 2027 Siyabhaka Academy Learnership Programme are expected to open in March or April 2027 through the RCL FOODS careers portal.

Together, the Sunbake packaging update and the continued growth of the Siyabhaka Academy show how RCL FOODS is investing in both its brands and the people who will help shape South Africa’s baking industry in the years ahead.
