New York Bakery brings potato buns to UK retail with launch of Legendary Burger Buns

The new range aims to capitalize on rising consumer demand for premium burger experiences at home, particularly as shoppers continue to trade up everyday meal occasions and seek restaurant-inspired products.

UK – New York Bakery Co., the undisputed leader in the United Kingdom’s retail bagel category, has officially announced its expansion into the premium burger bun market with the launch of its new Legendary Burger Buns.

This strategic category expansion introduces the increasingly popular American-style potato bun format directly to British supermarket shelves, allowing shoppers to recreate gourmet restaurant experiences at home.

Originally popularized in iconic New York City burger joints and championed by global cult-favorite foodservice brands like Shake Shack and Smashburger, potato buns have achieved massive critical acclaim for their unique functional properties.

Baked with potato flour, the buns are celebrated for their exceptionally soft, pillowy texture and unrivalled juice-holding structural integrity.

This allows them to lock in rich flavors and withstand heavy burger fillings and sauces without breaking apart or becoming soggy.

The brand’s decision to enter the burger category is driven by strong shifting dynamics within the domestic bread and foodservice sectors.

Over the past four years, menu penetration of the potato bun format in restaurants and burger outlets in the United Kingdom has grown by an impressive 33%.

Simultaneously, market data indicates that 73% of domestic consumers are actively willing to pay a premium for burgers served in higher-quality, gourmet-style buns, highlighting a clear commercial opportunity for retailers to capitalize on the premiumization trend in the bakery aisle.

Claire Kong, Marketing Director at New York Bakery Co., stated that the Legendary Burger Buns directly respond to this rising demand for restaurant-quality bread options as consumers continue to elevate at-home dining and entertaining.

Kong added that the soft, versatile format bridges the gap between foodservice quality and everyday retail accessibility, positioning the brand to capture incremental value ahead of peak seasonal trading periods such as summer barbecues and major televised sporting events.

The product line is launching initially in an Original variant, with each retail pack containing four pre-sliced buns.

Aligned with modern dietary preferences and health guidelines, the recipe is entirely HFSS-compliant, vegan-friendly, and completely free from artificial colorings or flavorings.

New York Bakery Co. will initiate its commercial rollout in June, with the Legendary Burger Buns set to land across major supermarket chains, including Tesco, Asda, and online grocery specialist Ocado, carrying a recommended retail price (RRP) of £2.25 (US$3.02) per pack.
