Mennel Milling Co. buys bakery mix business Summit Hill Foods

USA – The Mennel Milling Co. and Homegrown Family Foods, LLC, on November 30 announced the acquisition of the commercial dry mix business and production equipment of Summit Hill Foods, formerly known as Southeastern Mills.

The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

According to the agreement, Summit Hill Foods will continue to produce commercial dry mix products through January 1, 2024, at which time Mennel will transition the business to its manufacturing facilities in Caledonia, Ohio, and Newton, North Carolina.

This acquisition creates an opportunity to further invest in our bakery mix production capabilities while diversifying our customer base,” said Ford Mennel, President of Mennel Milling Company.

Mennel noted that growth in the bakery mix and food service facilities promotes companywide success – leading to opportunities in the company’s grain, flour milling, and transportation divisions as well.

He revealed that the company buys grain directly from the farm, mill it, process it, blend in additional ingredients, and deliver a superior wholesale mix to our valued customers.

It’s a niche we are proud to do well; and one we plan to continue to leverage and support our overall growth strategy.”

Headquartered in Rome, Georgia, and founded in 1941, Summit Hill Foods began as a family-owned baking business.

The company has grown into a leading branded food company with nationally recognized, premium brands and well-known, high-quality bases and sauces to support its restaurant, food service, and industrial partners.

Jack Stout, president of Homegrown Family Foods, said the acquisition of Summit’s branded dry mix business is the company’s third since 2019.

Other brands owned by the company include Don’s Chuck Wagon, Kentucky Kernel, Nancy Jane, Southern Biscuit, and Tenda-Bake.

We are incredibly excited to add these high-quality branded products to our current portfolio,” he said.

We share Summit Hill’s commitment to providing a workplace that fosters excellence while delivering the highest quality branded products to our customers. We look forward to being excellent stewards of these heritage brands.”

The Mennel team is committed to the seamless transition of Summit Hill Foods’ commercial dry mix business into their existing bakery mix operations.

“The experienced folks in our sales, packaged products, procurement, R&D, and food safety, quality, and regulatory departments are working closely with our new partners to meet and ultimately exceed their expectations moving forward,” added Ford Mennel.
