Lantmännen announces construction of US$72M production facility in Sweden

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, with operations expected to start in 2027.

SWEDEN – Lantmännen has announced a significant investment of 700 million Swedish krona (approximately US$72.64 million) to construct a new production facility in Örebro, Sweden.

The new facility, which will cover nearly 140,000 square feet and span three floors, will be built within the existing facility area.

“With this expansion, we are increasing capacity and thus enhancing Swedish food production. The building will incorporate various measures to support our climate ambitions, including solar panels and technology upgrades. These enhancements demonstrate our ongoing commitment to responsible growth and continuous improvements in environmental performance,” said Jonas Lindell, managing director of Lantmännen Unibake Sweden.

Lantmännen has operated a bakery in Örebro since 1963, which has grown into one of Europe’s largest specialty bakeries, producing over two million pieces per day. The company opened a central warehouse in the facility area earlier in 2023.

“This new facility enables us to meet the growing demands of our customers while strengthening our position in the region. It reflects our strong commitment to Swedish food production and constitutes a long-term investment in reliability, product quality, and innovation,” remarked Lindell.

In April, the European Investment Bank (EIB) agreed to provide a loan of approximately $53.5 million (€50 million), which will cover about half of the total investment cost for Lantmännen’s new pea protein isolate facility in Lidköping, Sweden.

This facility is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027 and will process over 40,000 tonnes of locally grown peas annually.

Once operational, the plant will produce pea protein for various food and drink products, including meat substitutes, dairy alternatives, breads, protein drinks, and snack bars.

This facility is being described as the first of its kind in Sweden and aims to support domestic food production while reducing dependency on imported protein sources, such as soy.

According to Lantmännen, the peas used will be grown by its member farmers, aligning with broader EU efforts to strengthen regional supply chains and promote agricultural sustainability.

The EIB loan is part of a larger EU strategy focused on boosting plant protein production, reducing environmental impacts from agriculture, and enhancing the resilience of food systems.

Peas and other legumes, such as field beans, are recognized for their low water and fertilizer requirements, making them beneficial for climate and biodiversity.
