Flowers Baking Co. of Baton Rouge to cease operations

USA—Flowers Foods, Inc. has announced the impending closure of Flowers Baking Co. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 

The company plans to halt all baking operations between September 18 and October 1, 2024. 

 This decision will affect 69 employees at the facility, which is known for producing white pan bread, hamburger buns, and hot dog buns.

 Darin Allen, the plant manager at Flowers Baking Co., stated, “Although the company plans to discontinue all baking operations, the shipping department will continue to service customers as part of a broader bakery warehouse network in Louisiana.” 

 This indicates that while baking will cease, the company will maintain some service through its shipping department, ensuring that customers still receive their products.

 The closure is part of Flowers Foods’ larger strategy. The company operates two other baking plants in Louisiana, one in Lafayette and another in New Orleans. 

 Various factors, including market conditions and operational efficiencies, drive the decision to shut down the Baton Rouge facility. 

 The company has not provided specific details regarding the reasons behind the closure, but it reflects a trend in the industry where companies are consolidating operations to remain competitive.
