Egypt launches 2025 wheat harvest season with strategic boost for food security

Over 420 collection points set up nationwide as government offers above-market prices to farmers to strengthen local supply and reduce import dependency.

EGYPT – Egypt’s 2025 wheat harvest season, revered locally as the “yellow gold” campaign, has kicked off across various governorates, marking a significant step in the government’s drive toward food self-sufficiency and agricultural resilience.

Backed by robust state support, this year’s harvest aims to significantly boost strategic wheat reserves and reduce the country’s dependence on imports, with more than 420 collection points activated and highly competitive procurement prices set above global market rates.

Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk, announced the strong start of the local procurement season, affirming that “all indicators so far are encouraging,” thanks to intensive preparations and multi-agency coordination.

In a bid to empower farmers and stimulate participation, the government has ensured that procurement prices are rewarding, financial dues are settled within 48 hours of delivery, and logistics are streamlined to ease the burden on suppliers.

This season is promising, not only for farmers but for Egypt’s food security strategy. We urge all farmers to seize this opportunity, deliver their harvests promptly, and benefit from the favorable pricing and support services provided by the state,” Farouk said.

The Egyptian government’s wheat strategy forms a key pillar of its national food security agenda. Strategic initiatives underway include the expansion of arable land, modernization of irrigation techniques, and the construction of advanced silo storage systems aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and preserving grain quality.

The silos, built and operated in partnership with entities like the Holding Company for Silos and Storage, will ensure that wheat supplies are protected and efficiently managed.

Additionally, the government has engaged multiple stakeholders, including the Future of Egypt for Sustainable Development Authority, the Agricultural Bank of Egypt, and milling companies under the Holding Company for Food Industries, to facilitate seamless wheat procurement across the country.

A centralized operations room at the Ministry of Supply, supported by local units in each governorate, has been activated to monitor real-time progress and troubleshoot issues on the ground.

The wheat harvest comes at a critical time for Egypt, a country that remains one of the world’s largest wheat importers. With global commodity prices remaining volatile, boosting domestic production is seen as vital to shielding the economy from external shocks, stabilizing bread prices, and ensuring consistent supply to meet the needs of over 100 million citizens.

Experts in the agricultural sector have hailed the government’s holistic approach as a model for sustainable development. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Supply plans to build on the momentum of the 2025 season to ensure long-term wheat sufficiency.
