USA – Bay State Milling Company, the largest family-owned, privately held grain miller in the United States, is celebrating a momentous milestone: 125 years of business and the transition to its fifth generation of family leadership.
According to the Family Business Consulting Group, this achievement places Bay State Milling among the elite 3% of family-owned businesses that survive beyond the fourth generation.
Founded in 1899, Bay State Milling has grown from a single mill in Winona, Minnesota, to a network of 12 facilities across the United States and Canada.
Its broad portfolio of traditional and gluten-free flours, grains, seeds, mixes, and blends are responsibly sourced and expertly processed to meet exacting specifications.
The company’s flagship mill in Winona, the site of its founding, remains the largest and will host the kickoff event for the anniversary celebration.
Additional events are planned at various facilities nationwide throughout the year to honor the dedicated employees who have contributed to this enduring legacy.
“In 1899, our founder traveled by train all the way from Boston to Winona to buy a bankrupt flour mill on the banks of the Mississippi River,” said Pete Levangie, President & CEO of Bay State Milling Company.
“Since then, Bay State Milling has been relentlessly pursuing the promotion of the growth of nutritious, sustainable, and accessible ingredients within our food system,” he added.
The company has continued to innovate and create industry-leading food ingredients in response to consumer demand for variety, health, taste, and affordability in their food choices.
Throughout its history, Bay State Milling has expanded its product offerings beyond commodity flour to include a wide variety of grain-based ingredients.
The Winona mill, employing 115 people, continues to produce high-quality wheat and rye flours, as well as HealthSense® High-Fiber Wheat Flour, the only high-fiber white flour in North America made from a unique varietal of non-GMO high-amylose wheat.
Additionally, the company has been named a U.S. Best Managed Company by Deloitte for two consecutive years and received an honorable mention in Fast Company’s 2023 World Changing Ideas Awards for its HealthSense® High-Fiber Wheat Flour.
