The new product line marks a format innovation for the 128-year-old family-owned business, combining the company’s traditional all-butter shortbread recipe with chunky inclusions, packaged in bite-sized pieces and resealable sharing tubs.

UK – Walker’s Shortbread, the historic 128-year-old family-run Scottish bakery manufacturer, has announced a significant brand innovation with the nationwide launch of Wee Chunkies.
The new product line represents a tactical shift for the Speyside-headquartered heritage baker, moving directly into the premium, heatable sweet biscuit sector to capture surging consumer demand for indulgent, shared evening snack experiences.
The new product architecture uses Walker’s traditional all-butter shortbread recipe as a foundation, adapting it into a bite-sized format packed with generous, chunky inclusions.
Crucially, the bite-sized treats are engineered to be gently reheated at home, allowing consumers to replicate the authentic aroma, gooey texture, and warmth of freshly baked shortbread straight from a bakery oven.
The innovative range debuts in two distinct flavor profiles: Triple Chocolate, which combines a rich blend of milk and dark chocolate chunks folded into the signature crumbly shortbread base, and Chocolate & Caramel, featuring pockets of sweet caramel and smooth Belgian chocolate pieces.
This strategic product rollout is directly aligned with shifting grocery market dynamics across the United Kingdom.
Brand analytics indicate that shopper missions focused on immediate indulgence, “everyday-evening” treats, and weekend relaxation have increased by more than 7.5% over the past year.
Comprehensive consumer testing confirmed the product’s alignment with these changing habits, with 75% of surveyed shoppers stating they would enjoy the product while watching television and 72% indicating they would share the snacks with family or friends.
Furthermore, the interactive, bite-sized format is successfully lowering the average age of the traditional shortbread demographic.
Research indicates that 73% of consumers aged 18 to 34 responded positively to the design and visual identity of the clear, shelf-ready, resealable sharing tubs, which are designed to support portability, keep the contents fresh, and drive high shelf visibility.
Bryony Walker, Commercial Director at Walker’s Shortbread, emphasized that the company used its century-old family recipe as the absolute core of this format innovation, enhancing it with rich additions to satisfy contemporary snacking profiles.
The new product line marks a major step forward for the brand as it expands its audience reach ahead of the summer trading season.
Walker’s Wee Chunkies are currently rolling out on shelves at premium supermarket chain Waitrose and are scheduled to launch nationwide distribution through Sainsbury’s on May 24, with an accessible retail price of £2.50 (US$3.36) per sharing tub.
