The agency cautioned that consuming unregistered edible oils poses significant health risks, including exposure to contaminants and poor-quality processing standards.

NIGERIA – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to consumers and traders concerning the proliferation of unregistered edible oil brands in Nigerian markets.
This advisory responds to complaints filed by Lebruni Agro Limited, a recognized processor in the sector, regarding the widespread circulation of unregistered brands such as FINO and OKI.
NAFDAC’s investigation confirmed that these brands are readily available and sold in major commercial hubs across the country, including prominent markets and retail outlets.
However, the unregistered status of these products means they have bypassed the agency’s mandatory safety evaluations and quality control standards.
This raises serious concerns about the safety and health implications for consumers who use these oils for cooking and food preparation.
The agency emphasized that edible oils must meet strict regulatory standards to ensure they are free from contaminants, adulterants, and other harmful substances.
Products without NAFDAC registration lack the certification that guarantees adherence to these standards, putting public health at potential risk.
NAFDAC has urged consumers to be vigilant when purchasing edible oils, advising them to check for proper registration numbers and labels before making a purchase.
The agency also called on retailers and distributors to desist from stocking or selling unregistered products, as doing so violates the law and endangers public safety.
Additionally, NAFDAC indicated that it will increase its surveillance and enforcement activities targeting markets where the unregistered brands have been identified.
The agency plans to collaborate with local authorities and other stakeholders to conduct raids, seize unregistered products, and prosecute offenders to deter further offenses.
Lebruni Agro Limited’s complaint underscores the growing challenge posed by counterfeit and unregulated food products in Nigeria’s fast-moving consumer goods sector.
Such products not only threaten consumer health but also undermine the business of legitimate processors who comply with regulatory frameworks and invest in quality assurance.
NAFDAC’s proactive stance highlights the importance of regulatory oversight in safeguarding food quality and consumer trust.
It reiterates the agency’s commitment to ensuring that all edible oils sold in Nigeria meet the safety, quality, and labeling requirements necessary to protect public health.
Consumers are encouraged to report any suspected unregistered products to NAFDAC through official channels to aid in the agency’s monitoring and enforcement efforts.
This collective vigilance is critical to curbing the spread of unsafe edible oils and maintaining market integrity.
