The shipment marks another step in the company’s efforts to strengthen grain supply options at its largest milling facility.

USA – The Mennel Milling Co., U.S.-based flour milling enterprise, has received a major shipment of soft wheat at its flour mill in Toledo, Ohio, marking the second vessel to arrive at the facility since the company acquired the site in late 2025.
The mill unloaded 10,723 tonnes of soft wheat, equivalent to just under 400,000 bushels, in about 24 hours. Mennel said the delivery showed the scale of operations at the Toledo facility and the teamwork required to handle a shipment of that size.
“The achievement highlighted not only the scale and capability of the Toledo operation but also the coordination, efficiency and dedication of the entire team involved in handling a shipment of this size,” the company said.
The Toledo facility is the first flour mill in Mennel’s network to receive wheat by ship. The company said this gives it access to wheat varieties grown in other parts of the United States as well as overseas markets, helping widen its sourcing options.
Mennel acquired the Toledo mill from Mondelez International in November 2025. Located on the Maumee River near Lake Erie, the facility supplies flour to customers across the region.
With a daily milling capacity of 40,000 hundredweight, the Toledo site is the largest mill in Mennel’s portfolio. Only the North Dakota Mill & Elevator in Grand Forks, North Dakota, has a higher capacity among US flour mills, at 54,400 hundredweight per day.
The mill receives wheat by truck, rail and ship and has grain storage capacity of 4.9 million bushels, according to the 2026 Grain & Milling Annual published by Sosland Publishing Co.
The Toledo facility has operated for more than 130 years. It began milling in 1892 and became part of the National Biscuit Co., better known as Nabisco, in 1926. Owners have expanded and upgraded the site several times since then.
Founded in 1886 and headquartered in Fostoria, Ohio, Mennel is one of the largest independent flour milling companies in the United States. The company operates mills across Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Virginia and North Carolina and supplies flour, specialty flour products, bakery mixes and grain-based ingredients to bakeries, food manufacturers and institutional customers.
The latest wheat shipment comes as Mennel continues to strengthen operations at the Toledo site following the acquisition, with the company seeking to make full use of the mill’s location, storage capacity and transport links.
