Lantmännen unveils US$48M grain facility project in Sweden

SWEDEN- Lantmännen, a prominent agricultural cooperative headquartered in Sweden, has announced plans for the construction of a cutting-edge grain storage facility in Uddevalla.

This ambitious venture, marking the largest undertaking of its kind for the company in nearly four decades, underscores Lantmännen’s steadfast commitment to advancing agricultural infrastructure and bolstering food security.

With construction slated to commence this spring, the SEK 500 million (US$48.2 million) project is slated for completion ahead of the 2026 harvest season. The state-of-the-art facility will encompass a comprehensive suite of amenities, including new grain reception, drying, storage bin, and handling equipment, poised to revolutionize the efficiency and capacity of grain processing operations.

Comprising 21 silos equipped with two advanced dryers, the facility is projected to facilitate a turnover of up to 100,000 tonnes of grain annually, signaling a quantum leap in storage capacity and operational efficiency compared to its predecessor.

Lantmännen anticipates that the enhanced capabilities of the new facility will not only streamline domestic grain logistics but also unlock new avenues for export expansion, positioning Swedish agriculture on the global stage.

Magnus Kagevik, President, and CEO of Lantmännen, emphasized the transformative potential of the investment, affirming the cooperative’s unwavering commitment to fortifying Swedish food production and amplifying export opportunities.

Kagevik remarked, “Lantmännen’s expertise and financial capacity enable this type of significant investment for Swedish agriculture and food production. This venture holds the promise of fortifying Swedish food preparedness and catalyzing the emergence of lucrative export channels for Swedish grain.”

Underlining Lantmännen’s dedication to fostering local partnerships, the cooperative has forged a collaboration with Tornum, a renowned supplier of grain storage and handling equipment with deep-rooted expertise in the domain.

Elisabeth Ringdahl, Executive Vice President of Lantmännen’s Agriculture Sector, underscored the strategic significance of the facility’s location, situated close to a deep-water port.

This strategic positioning not only optimizes logistical efficiency but also unlocks access to lucrative international markets, including the US and North Africa, thereby maximizing revenue potential for local farmers.

As a cooperative owned by 18,000 Swedish farmers, Lantmännen occupies a pivotal role in the nation’s agricultural landscape, boasting a workforce of 10,000 employees and operations spanning over 20 countries.

With annual gross revenue approaching SEK 65 billion (US$6.2 billion), Lantmännen’s ambitious foray into grain infrastructure underscores its steadfast commitment to driving sustainable growth and prosperity across Sweden’s agricultural sector.
