Kellanova invests US$98.2M to expand cereal production in Wrexham

USAKellanova, formerly known as Kellogg’s, has announced a significant investment of £75 million (US$98 million) to enhance its cereal production capabilities at its Wrexham, North Wales facility.

This initiative is set to more than double the plant’s output to approximately 1.5 million cereal boxes per day, marking a pivotal moment for the company and the local economy.

The Wrexham site, operational since 1978, is already renowned for producing popular cereals such as Special K, All Bran, Bran Flakes, and Fruit ‘n Fibre.

As part of Kellanova’s strategic shift, production of additional brands like Corn Flakes and Crunchy Nut will be relocated from the Trafford Park factory in Manchester, which is scheduled to close by late 2026.

This transition will result in the loss of around 360 jobs at the Manchester site, a decision made due to the site’s unsustainable production levels.

Chris Silcock, Managing Director of Kellanova’s UK operations, emphasized the importance of this investment: “This investment is a major commitment to cereal production in the UK. By bringing together the manufacturing of all our major breakfast cereals at one site in Wrexham, we can make significant strides forward in efficiency, quality, and sustainability.”

He added that this consolidation positions Kellanova for future success while creating new opportunities for its beloved brands.

The investment is anticipated to create at least 130 new jobs at the Wrexham plant, which currently employs around 350 staff members.

The expansion will involve adding two advanced production lines designed to enhance sustainability through artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies.

These innovations aim to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by an estimated 11% annually—equivalent to planting approximately 600,000 trees.

In addition to increasing production capacity, Kellanova plans to implement new packaging lines and upgrade existing production facilities.

This modernization will improve efficiency and allow for greater flexibility in introducing new cereal formats and ingredients to meet evolving consumer preferences.

Local officials have expressed their support for Kellanova’s plans. Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens described the investment as a “huge vote of confidence in the economy of north-east Wales.”

She noted that it aligns with the government’s mission to attract investment and grow the economy.

Similarly, Andrew Ranger, Member of Parliament for Wrexham, highlighted the significance of the skilled workforce in the area: “Our skilled workforce is one of Wrexham’s greatest assets… Kellanova’s focus on sustainable practices will help move towards a greener future.”

Kellanova’s investment represents its largest single financial commitment to British cereal production in over three decades.

The company aims to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and support career development initiatives for existing employees at the Wrexham site.

Significant upgrades will be made to training facilities as part of this effort, ensuring that staff are well-equipped for future challenges.
