Kalmbach Feeds expands infrastructure through acquisition of Mennel grain elevator

USA – Kalmbach Feeds has completed the acquisition of a prominent grain elevator and rail transload facility in Upper Sandusky from The Mennel Milling Company.
The site expands Kalmbach’s operational footprint within Wyandot County and enhances its direct access to regionally sourced grains.
The acquired property features nearly two million bushels of licensed upright storage capacity, along with a dedicated connection to the CSX rail network.
Equipped with high-volume unit-train loading and unloading infrastructure, the site offers vital handling capabilities for corn, soybeans, and wheat.
For Kalmbach Feeds, the added capacity aligns directly with ongoing investments across its core livestock feed, pet food, and ingredient distribution divisions.
Leadership from both organizations framed the deal as a mutually beneficial alignment between two long-standing, family-owned agricultural enterprises.
Paul Kalmbach Jr., President of Kalmbach Feeds, noted that the acquisition was built on strong trust and a close working relationship between the two management teams.
He emphasized that the added infrastructure will support regional farmers while positioning the company to serve its growing customer base over the long term.
Representing the seller, D. Ford Mennel, President and CEO of Mennel Milling, explained that shifting local market dynamics in the county led the company to evaluate how well the C&O facility aligned with its long-range strategy.
Transferring the site to Kalmbach ensures the facility continues to serve as an active market outlet for local agricultural producers while allowing Mennel to optimize its broader asset portfolio.
The acquisition secures critical supply-chain capabilities for Kalmbach Feeds in its home county, supporting both its raw material sourcing strategy and localized employment as the company recruits to staff the newly acquired operational asset.
