AWL Agri Business imports India’s largest single parcel of edible oil to strengthen supply chain efficiency

The milestone underscores AWL’s efforts to improve sourcing efficiency and reinforce India‘s edible oil supply chain amid continued reliance on imports.

INDIA – AWL Agri Business Limited (formerly Adani Wilmar Limited), one of India’s leading food and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies, has created a major logistics benchmark by importing 66,800 metric tonnes of degummed soybean oil in a single shipment.

Delivered to Mundra Port on the vessel MT Bangus, the massive consignment represents the largest single parcel of edible oil ever brought into an Indian port on a single vessel.

The record-setting shipment originated from San Lorenzo, Argentina, and was safely discharged at Mundra Port in Gujarat, where it will be processed at AWL Agri Business’s neighboring mega-refinery.

Sourcing an edible oil consignment of this scale in one consolidated vessel, rather than splitting the volume across three or four smaller shipments, significantly reduces per-tonne ocean freight expenses, minimizes port calls and turnaround fees, and provides the processing facility with an extended, uninterrupted production run on a uniform batch of raw material.

Handling a fully laden tanker carrying nearly 67,000 tonnes of liquid cargo required sophisticated infrastructure and operational coordination. AWL Agri Business worked closely with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) and the operations team at Mundra Port to execute the offloading.

Equipped with deep-draft berths, high-capacity dedicated edible oil pipelines, and extensive shore storage tankage, the port successfully managed the receipt of the cargo without incurring vessel delays or supply chain bottlenecks.

India relies on overseas markets for more than half of its total domestic cooking oil requirements, with soybean oil forming a core segment alongside palm and sunflower oils.

High-volume, streamlined import operations play a pivotal role in maintaining market supply stability, managing landed costs, and bolstering national food security.

Managing Director and CEO Shrikant Kanhere noted that the milestone reflects growing domestic demand and highlights the evolution of India’s west coast maritime and refining infrastructure over the past decade.

He added that the company expects large-parcel procurement along South American shipping corridors to become an increasingly routine feature of its long-term commodity sourcing strategy.

The record import highlights the increasing importance of large-scale logistics and infrastructure investments in supporting India’s food security.

By leveraging high-capacity ports and efficient supply chain management, companies such as AWL Agri Business are seeking to improve procurement flexibility, reduce costs, and ensure a steady supply of essential cooking oils for consumers nationwide.
