ALAF Limited to construct 28 new high-quality grain storage facilities in Tanzania

TANZANIA – ALAF Limited Tanzania, a leading producer of steel products, has laid the foundation for the construction of 28 new grain storage facilities to address the long-standing shortage of storage infrastructure in the Ruvuma region.

The company has assured Ruvuma residents that the new facilities will be of the highest quality as the construction will employ modern technology.

This assurance was made following President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s recent visit to Luhimba-Madaba in Songea, where she laid the foundation stone for the facilities, marking a significant milestone for the region’s agricultural sector.

Julius Nalitolela, ALAF Limited’s Project Manager, praised the Tanzanian government, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture, for spearheading this initiative.

He emphasized that the company is utilizing advanced construction technology, making this the country’s first project of its kind.

“This technology ensures that the quality of these storage facilities is unmatched, providing a permanent solution to grain storage issues in the Ruvuma region,” Nalitolela stated.

A key innovation in the project is the use of ALAF’s Saflok roofing system, designed to prevent leakage, particularly during the rainy season.

Nalitolela highlighted that this product’s durability and leak-proof qualities will safeguard grain from moisture damage, a major issue that has affected grain storage in the past.

Additionally, light gauge materials are being used for the construction of associated offices and sanitary facilities, offering benefits such as termite resistance, rust-proofing, and ease of installation. The use of computer fabrication technology ensures precision and minimizes waste on-site, contributing to a more efficient and eco-friendly construction process.

National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) Project Manager, Engineer Iman Nzobonaliba, further elaborated on the capacity and impact of the project.

He confirmed that the storage facilities would hold over 28,000 tonnes of grain upon completion, significantly alleviating storage shortages in the region.

The facilities are expected to support local farmers by providing a safe, durable solution for grain preservation, reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring food security for the region. The project, now 90% complete, is set to be finalized by November 2024.

The Ministry of Agriculture has been actively investing in grain storage to support the National Food Reserve Agency’s mission of mitigating food shortages and stabilizing the country’s food supply.
