The Modeste signing became necessary after star striker Sébastien Haller was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the preseason.
Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that they have signed Anthony Modeste from league rivals 1. FC Köln. The Black and Yellows announced the transfer on Monday evening. Modeste has signed a one-year deal in Dortmund and is expected to earn €6 million. Köln will receive €5 million for the 34-year-old striker whose contract expires at the season’s end.
The Modeste signing became necessary after star striker Sébastien Haller was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the preseason. Haller will have to undergo chemotherapy and miss several months before returning to training.
“After an in-depth analysis following last season, we decided to sing a typical no.9 to add physical attributes and aerial danger to our attack,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl said in a club statement. “With the background of Haller’s diagnosis, we are happy that we were able to add that sort of player on short notice. He is a player who knows the Bundesliga well and has scored 20 goals last season, and his profile fits perfectly to the sort of football head coach Edin Terzic wants to play.”
